Heritage
Goldsborough and Flaxby Parish Council decided in 2024 to commission the installation of a Goldsborough village heritage board to succinctly capture some of the incredible history of the village.
From the days of being a location where Vikings roamed to successfully being recognised in the Doomsday Book as a farming community with St Mary’s church being built shortly thereafter. The original manor house overseeing the estate lands was replaced in the 16th Century by the present Goldsborough Hall and there have been some noteworthy residents, including Princess Mary, Daniel Lascelles - and the Byerley Turk.
The subsequent construction of the Bay Horse Inn and Goldsborough school to cater for the growing population has been followed by housing being built for people to enjoy the benefits of the attractive rural location. The present thriving community are still able to enjoy the history and heritage on display throughout the village, while also enjoying the community environment accompanied by many modern facilities and lifestyles.
Thanks for the support to the Parish Council in the creation and installation of the heritage board go to:
Paul Dunstan for the illustrations, the Goldborough History Group for much of the narrative, Knaresborough Graphics for the design, and North Yorkshire Council for funding contributions.’
